Listen22/01/2010 - 09:51 It is always a great pleasure to welcome a new initiative for the promotion of new music. This collaboration of 22 leading European new music ensembles from 11 countries is unique in its conception, ensuring the best of what is composed in the participating countries,while at the same time guaranteeing a wide diversity in styles and esthetics. "Mobility of Repertoire", it sounds so straightforward: just send a score to an ensemble in another country and they will perform it. However, cultural politics LEADS TO THE CREATION OF different TYPES of ensemble in different countries. These ensembles have stimulated specific types of music within the scene in which they operate, making it less obvious for the sent-in score to match the receiving ensemble. Is this a problem? For one thing, it certainly decreases the opportunities for the score to be performed! But at the same time it enriches cultural diversity between the countries, hence artistic interest. How will the Re:new Music network deal with these issues? Will artistic diversity survive despite the ever growing demands of formats and globalisation? Only the many concerts can tell, so, let's listen and report back here on this blog.
