Biography

Wiesław Cienciała, composer and music tutor, b. 17th August 1961 in Cieszyn.
He studied in the Music Academy in Katowice: music theory (master’s degree in 1987) and composition with Józef Świder (master’s degree in 1989).
He has received some awards in competitions for composers: Stanisław Wiechowicz Competition for Composers (Szczecin, 1984), 22nd Grzegorz Fitelberg Competition for Composers (Katowice, 1988) and in 1990 - Prize of the Governor of the Katowice province for Young Artists.
He was granted scholarships by the Polish Ministry of Culture and Art in 1989 and 1990.
He participated in courses for composers in Kazimierz on the Vistula, Warsaw, Katowice.
His works have been performed at many festivals of contemporary music, including "The Warsaw Autumn", Silesian Days of Contemporary Music, XXth Century Music Days (Wrocław), Gdańsk Encounters of Young Composers "The Road", Mikołów Music Days, Panorama of Christian Art "Musica Sacra", "Melos-Etos" (Bratislava)
His works have been commissioned by Polish Radio Experimental Studio at Warsaw, city of Cieszyn, Panorama of Christian Art "Musica Sacra", Silesian Philharmony in Katowice.
Since 1987 Wiesław Cienciała has been a faculty member in the Silesian University Branch (Music Institute) in Cieszyn, since 2008: dean of Faculty of Arts.
Since 2003 he is the assistant professor of Music Academy in Katowice.
He organised the concerts "New and Recent Music" in Cieszyn (1999-2002).
In 1993-2004 he was vice-president of the Katowice branch of the Polish Composers' Union.
