Notes
| Programme notes |
This unusual structure for Lang is fairly clearly divided into eight sections of varying texture and atmosphere. The work was commissioned in 2007 by Austria's Erste Bank, in honour of Lang's compositions up to that point, which Lang then took as an opportunity to gently subvert expectations based on his known work with a new strategy. Tutti and soloist sections, their lenght again coordinated according to the values of the Fibonacci system (and thus to the proportions of the Golden Mean), alternate in an unpredictable fashion. The tonal image condenses to a vibrating chromatic field (section 5) and is then thinned out to mono-tonal and bi-tonal sounds (sections 3,4,6 and 8). The tempo also oscillates between virtual standstill and rapid fluctuation. A continuous third interval, expressed particularly strongly in the piano, runs like a leitmotif through this tonal book of blithe serenity.
